From ten feet away, most pool decking looks like concrete. Up close, it might be a coating, an overlay, travertine, or pavers, and each responds differently to pressure.
Identify the material first
Cool-deck and acrylic overlays are the most common source of problems. High pressure can lift a coating that is already beginning to fail, turning a cosmetic issue into a visible one.
Travertine and natural stone are softer than they look and can be marked permanently by an aggressive tip held too close.
Ask for a test area
Any contractor working on decking with an uncertain finish should clean a small, inconspicuous area first and show you the result before continuing.
Plan around equipment and plantings
Pool equipment pads, plantings, and furniture all need a plan before work starts. Ask how runoff will be managed and whether your pool chemistry needs any attention afterward.
